Pole position: Leipzig noted the biggest increase in international tourism in Germany!Leipzig is liked more and more by international visitors. According to the data published by the Federal Statistical Office, the number of overnight stays in the city of trade, grew by 36% in the first half of 2008. This placed Leipzig on the pole position, in front of Düsseldorf (+32,7 %) and Hamburg (+7,3%). Dresden came last out of ten compared cities with a decrease of 1,4 %. The highest growth was noted among the tourists from Russia (+128,4), Belgium (+105,3), and the US. In total, over the first six months of this year, 171 493 international visitors stayed at the local Hotels and Pensions. This number constitutes one fifth of all overnight stays in Saxony. During the same period, over 25 million bookings have been recorded nationwide. The 5,6 % growth in bookings (with regard to international visitors) is overshadowed by the excellent result of the City of Trade Fairs.
